9 Faulty SEO Strategies To Avoid

September 16th, 2009

The following are the top 9 faulty SEO strategies that all web designers and developers should avoid:

Using “Click here” or “Learn more” as the linking text is non-descriptive for web spiders. Be more specific with a topic/keyword in your link anchor text but avoid using the exact anchor text ubiquitously in your site. It’s sometimes seen as search engine spam.

Theme Design Versioning
When designers version their site’s theme design into sub level folders and forward the visitor to the new folder, this will likely make you unable to find backlink counts, even lowering your ranking. It’s the result of continually altering the main root location.

Flash Menus
Flash menus in sites, especially those menus that fade-in and are animated, are invisible to search engines. The links in the flash menu cannot be followed by a spider which isn’t good if you want your site to rank in search engine indexes.

Flash and Image Content
Embedding valuable site content (e.g. target keywords) in Flash and images make it impossible for web spiders to read the text since they browse more effectively site text.

Using a Splash Page
This happens when a website simply puts a “Click here to enter” link with just a big banner image on its homepage. It prevents spiders from putting your site’s internal pages in the search engine index because of no suitable linking structure for them to follow. Instead, include links to relevant pages and target keywords in your homepage.

Overuse of Ajax
Ajax features used for site navigation are not advisable. Its address URL cannot reload making visitors unable to send their friends the page they are on. Also, the content of ajax is dynamically loaded making it non-spiderable and thus cannot be indexed by search engines.

Not Using the Image Alt Attribute
Properly describe each of your images in the alt attribute because it’s what blind web users and web spiders comprehend and read. Good image alt attributes get you higher index rankings from search engines so describe images effectively.

Unfriendly URLs
The URL should be friendly for the sake of both your human audience and search engines. http://www.yourdomain.com/efrgy654/go.php?hgaksjdf&p=ddfznvb4 can be translated to easily readable URLs using mod rewrite. Your keywords should appear in your URL, so you get better index rankings.

Frequent Title Tag Mistakes
• Avoid using title tags that are all alike or similar with each other to get higher search engine index ranking. Do use one of a kind <title> tags with target keywords for your webpages.
• Don’t exceed the 65 character limit in posting titles since you risk getting your title cutoff. Search engine indexes only use your title tag for the link heading.
• It is a faulty SEO strategy to make repetitive use of keywords in title tags, since it might be put down as spam by search engines.

The next time you are designing your website, remember these tips and enjoy better SEO results.
