The Importance Of Search Analytics For Bloggers

April 5th, 2010

As a blogger, you have to learn about search analytics because people may visit you for new posts from your friend’s links, social media shares, etc. But in the end, it is search traffic that creates that steady course of targeted visits.

Even though you may be reluctant to optimize your site for search traffic (as a search marketer, keywords are not exactly my focus because when I write for my blog, I feel that doing so in one way or another limits my creativity); however, there is more to search analytics than you can expect.

1. Inspiration in a constant stream

It is amazing what people search and how they end up on your site. It is just like seeing what they ask that would be pertinent to the content of your current blog:

•    Find out about search referrals driving the least traffic (such are ones about the content of your post but not exactly, that is why it didn’t rank as high and driving only a part of traffic. This is perfect for getting an idea of neighboring topics that can be used for follow-ups on content already existing);
•    Long-tail phrase focus: contains 3+ words which are commonly the most enjoyable to research and also the most revealing.

2. Zoom in on the attention-grabbing posts

An excellent way to check out what is most appealing to your readers is traffic analysis.

1.    Analyzing how people reached the pages that are identified with the most views.
2.    Know which pages people have spent a lot of time on, which is a terrific way to research on the type of content that will engage your readers best.

Tips for increased exposure:

•    There are WordPress plugins that features the most viewed posts;
•    Post articles that are attention-grabbing.
•    Links between old and new posts, boosting the performance of your older posts as well as give you another motive to post something fresh about the same topic.

How to do blog search analytics

The next thing to figure out now that you are convinced on the significance of knowing the basics of traffic analytics in order to have better interaction with readers is how to do it. There are some information and well-outlined guides for bloggers regarding search analytics. Here is a list of helpful posts below (with Google Analytics as the basis).

Increase Your Adsense Earnings in Ten Ways

April 1st, 2010

Getting money from Adsense has earned its own controversy. Others tried hard but nevertheless did not earn the income they think they deserve. Most of the sceptics out there are unsuccessful because of (1) they do not have enough traffic (2) although they have the traffic, they do not know how to optimize their ads the right way.  Although there are haters, there are those swearing by the income they earn from Adsense.

The number one rule for your Adsense advertising program to flourish and eventually give you the conversion you like is traffic. And traffic is gained through your own marketing efforts, of course. I have learned a lot from running Google adverts for the last three years. Having said that, running the same advertising program for a considerable amount of time can give you the necessary knowledge of what to do and what not to do.  Below are tips I would like to share with you regarding Adsense.

10 Tips to Increase Your Adsense Income

1. Use section targeting – The main purpose of this is to increase the relevancy of your adverts.  Not much has been said about this style but it does work for a lot sites.  Try it; it’s worth a shot.

2. Focus on competitive niches – A lot of people are saying negative things about Made-For-Advertising (MFA) sites but they do work.  But I am not talking about spam sites.  I am talking about high quality, high paying, informative sites that bring in $5-$10 per day in so short a time!  When you’re making over $1 per click, you really don’t need that much traffic.

3. Remove sites with 1% or less Click Thru Rate (CTR) – Others say that CTR causes some smart pricing.  It’s not worth taking the risk. So if a site has 1% or less CTR, remove it.  Remove Adsense for a week and check whether your Adsense income in general rises.  If so, tough luck, your site probably hit the Google Smart Pricing.  If that particular site that you removed has caused the smart pricing, try a different model.

4. Use large rectangles for your ads whenever possible – Large rectangles of ads appearing at the top center of a page work in my experience with my niche sites.  It gets good CTRs.  Although others think its rather spammy, it sure gives you nice click thru’s.

5. Remove the ion-site Advertiser link from your ads – In my personal experience, when I removed this link, I noticed an immediate increase in earnings.  Call it coincidence or whatever but it worked.  It’s just one less thing that makes it look like an ad.

6. Remove border and use the same link and background color of your page – Testing is important at this stage.  It may be applicable on every page or not.  But often time, blending in converts!

7. Remove ads that are not targeted to your content – There are occasions where an ad always appear on your page (s).  Remove it with the competitive ads filter inside your account.

8. Do not go by Google’s heat map – It might look good in your layouts but there are a lot of variables.  Layout effectiveness is brought about by color, style, and niche, to name a few.  Testing is your best option.

9. Avoid putting many ads on your page – A common newbie mistake is that they tend to put a lot of ads or affiliate banners on their page for better monetization.  However, putting a lot of ads without actually converting is useless.  A couple of optimized ads that converts is better.

10. Be honest – Others ask their friends or colleagues to click on the ads they have to get monetized.  Doing this several times using the same IP or geographical location would ban you from Google Adsense for life.  Click fraud is a no-no for Google.  It’s not worth doing it.

Tips mentioned above are the things I have personally learned from being a Google Adsense user. It generally gave me a lot of conversions. Try using these steps, they may make your Google Adsense experience better.
