For search engine optimization and to get targeted traffic to your site, you need to build links to your site because links are a part of the search engine algorithm that helps search engines decide which pages to show in search results. Link bait articles are articles that teach users on how to do this or that, reviews about other products and services, resource lists, best-of or toplists about hot services or products in your niches and so on.

Another useful way to increase links is submission to several niche related directories. Most of them provide free service and accept your link in specified categories.
Additionally list with craigslist and advertise in their classified column. You can join Squidoo and build a lense.  In addition you can join social sites like Digg or Delicious that may link your articles to your website. Joining various forums can increase your links. Many forums provide links to profile or signature links to members. Making posts on forums will provide links to your site as well as commenting on blogs in your niche. Consistent posting will increase visitors to your website or blog.

Pay-Per-Click Ads:

If you have a low marketing budget available, then you could spend it on Pay-Per-Click advertising. You get relevant visitors with from PPC ads in search engine results and more sales. When people are drawn to your website by different means, they may find something attractive and may link to your site.

When used on a consistent basis, these methods can be used successfully to increase traffic to your website or blog whether you are on zero or low budget.
