Smile Facebook thinks I’m Norwegian

At first I thought the Facebook ads I saw on my profile were some kind of play on the credits for ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’, but then I figured out what was happening.

I picked up a new tax deduction cellphone on Friday, a Sanyo Katana DLX with as much data access as Sprint could foist upon me. In having fun with my new toy work tool, I decided to use the Internet capability to visit Facebook.

Facebook loaded up as I expected, but with something strange on the Profile page: advertisements in some kind of Scandinavian text. I thought it was a joke, but on returning to the page a couple of different times, I saw similar ads on display.

Then I figured it out. Since I was using the Opera Mini browser, Facebook must have thought I was browsing to the site from Norway. Bizarre.

Whatever happened has been fixed. Today, there are ads for hardwood floors for the Louisville market, only 70 miles away from where I live.

At least it’s closer than Oslo.
