Sam’s Club Offers Search Engine Optimization, Not A Good Deal
I couldn’t believe my eyes. Scott Buresh thinks Sam’s Club offering search engine optimization is a kosher idea. What!?
Actually, he makes some good points. And I kind of agree. It could be good for the search marketing industry. It might actually legitimize us in some strange, awkward way. But I’ll have to take issue with his statement that $25/month for website submission services is a good idea. It’s not. A one-time $25 fee is a good idea, but most small businesses aren’t going to need ongoing service unless there is something else involved. Do they get article submissions? Is there any SEM involved? What about blog set up? Nothing? How’s that a good idea?
What it boils down to, if I’m understanding this correctly, is the small business owner logs onto the website and fills out a form. Sam’s Club, or its partner, will then automatically submit that information to all the local search engines and the major search engines. That’s only partially a useful service, as Buresh points out. But after that, the small business will keep paying $25 a month, which is largely a waste unless they have to update their information. The only way that would not be a waste is if the company has to update its information every month - but no company should need to update its contact information that often.
The $25/month fee is only reasonable if small businesses get something more than just local search listings.
